Building an Outdoor Kitchen on a Deck: What It Takes to Do It Safely

Building an Outdoor Kitchen on a Deck: What It Takes to Do It Safely

On a lot of Independence homes the deck is the natural place to cook: it's level with the kitchen door and already where people gather. Putting an outdoor kitchen there is doable, but two things have to be handled first. The first is weight. A deck is designed for people and furniture, spread out; a stone-clad island with a granite top, a built-in grill and a refrigerator concentrates thousands of pounds in one spot. That usually means adding joists, a beam or extra posts and footings under the island, and on an older deck it means checking the ledger connection to the house before adding any load. Lighter construction helps: stainless steel or marine-grade polymer cabinets and a stainless frame weigh a fraction of block and stone. The second is heat. Wood and composite decking are combustible, so the grill needs an insulated jacket approved by its manufacturer, the clearances in its manual, and a non-combustible surface under and around the cooking area. Keep it out from under low eaves and vinyl soffits, and never place a smoker or pizza oven directly on decking without the base the manufacturer specifies. Gas and electrical lines run along the deck framing need the same permits and inspections as anywhere else. If your deck is ready, see built-in grill islands; if it needs reinforcing, our design and construction service covers the structure too.
